Our pigs are raised and reared on the rolling hillside of the sleepy Bissoe Valley. In fact we are so proud of our herd of Cornish Black Pigs that we have regular open days.
The Large Black is a rare breed pig from Cornwall and is prized for its suitability for outdoor breeding, it has natural fat as an insulating layer during wintertime and its dark colour prevents sunburn in the summertime. Each unit of pigs has access to a mud bath to keep them cool in the hot summer months.
Many high bred pigs of today are no longer suited to free-ranging as many generations before them have only been raised indoors. Some never seeing the light of day and often unable to walk due to being fattened to an extreme extent.
Our pigs are kept outside in paddocks, as they are natural grass eaters, with deep filled arks. They are fed BOCM feed in addition to their own findings which is scattered on the ground. It is possible for them to root naturally, giving them hours of enjoyment as none of our pigs wear nose rings. In order to minimise stress no teeth clipping or tail docking is practised.
The Large Black is renowned for its excellent parenting skills, both the boar and sow having very placid temperaments. They are very docile making them suited to simple outdoor systems.
The sow is brought in to give birth in the nurseries, which are deep bedded stables to enable her to take care of her young in those first few days, we do not place them in a farrowing pen, so she is free to wander in and out of her birthing unit during the day. They then return to their paddock and feed from their mother until being weaned at two months of age where they continue to grow with their siblings in small groups.
We let the pigs grow at a natural rate and as they mature slowly giving you excellent flavour and succulence. |
